Laying on mommy's chestMost babies absolutely love listening to their mamma’s heartbeat. It is comforting to them and gives them a sense of confidence. Mommy is here, and everything is going to be okay. One way that we have found to be effective for tummy time is to lay baby on mommy’s chest or stomach. This gives them the comfort of hearing your heart beat while having to do something unpleasant. Sometimes, I prop my head up with a pillow, so that I can talk with my little one. He really likes to watch my face and will strive very hard to lift his head up to see me. Doing tummy time this way is a win win for both of us. We get some quality time together, and he gets to practice this much needed development without tears.
Engaging EnvironmentAnother way that has been effective in turning tummy time tears into smiles is the change of environment. My little one loves being outside, so on a nice, sunny day I try to do half or our tummy time outside. The green grass and crinkly leaves provide a special allurement that keeps him occupied for quite a length of time. When he could barely hold his head up though, he just enjoyed laying there watching the trees and occasional bird fly by.
Water PlaySomething that has also been helpful but a little bit odd is the introduction of water into our tummy time. After my delivery, I spent a lot of time taking baths, and during this time, my little one got very used to the water. Now at five months, he loves taking a bath with mommy. I cherish these times because I know I won’t be able to do this much longer for obvious reasons. :) I have transformed some of these times by making them count for tummy time too. I hold his arms and face a little out of the water while he holds the rest of his body up and kicks his feet. This is probably his most favorite time of the day and mine too!
Sometimes, I have found that the timing of tummy time is vitally important when you are trying to avoid tears. My son is on a eat, play, sleep schedule, so tummy time is most enjoyable right after he eats. Sometimes even though I do all of the above, it is to no avail if he is getting tired. What are some tips and tricks you have for turning tummy time from tears to smiles?
